Survey Reveals Significant Awareness of Green Initiatives in the Security Industry
Hikvision and asmag.com have recently conducted a collaborative survey, researching market sentiment towards green practices and technologies within the security industry. The survey gathered valuable insights about the importance of sustainability, and how it influences respondents’ businesses and purchasing decisions. Considerable familiarity with green practices Survey results revealed a large majority of respondents (88%) – from both Western and Asian regions – expressed familiarity with this topic, indicating a strong awareness of its importance within the security industry. However, discrepancies were noted in levels of understanding and implementation. A total of 61% from the Western sector indicated they understood or had implemented green practices in their businesses, compared with 55% of Asian respondents. Increasing demand for green security products and solutions The survey exhibits that there is demand for green security products and solutions in both Western and Asian markets. However, there is more consistent demand seen among Western respondents and potential growth opportunities in Asia. The survey results indicate that Western respondents see a stronger demand for eco-friendly products and solutions, with 11% reporting consistent and 33% reporting frequent requests from clients. The numbers were lower for Asian respondents with 10% and 12% respectively. However, a notable 39% of Asian channel players noted occasional requests which can suggest a growing interest in sustainable solutions. Challenges in adopting green practices within the security industry An estimated 18% of survey respondents indicated that a significant obstacle right now is that the adoption of green and low carbon practices has not been yet recognized as essential in the security industry. High costs and uncertainty of RoI is also stated as another primary challenge. Other issues such as a ‘lack of public awareness’ and ‘absence of standardization & certifications’ were chosen by 17% of respondents as primary obstacles. These insights point to opportunities for market education, aiming to simplify decision-making for channel players while transparently showcasing the achievable RoI and practical benefits. The future of sustainable practices within the security industry When inquired about the adoption of green and low carbon practices in the coming years, the overall responses convey a positive outlook, with only 4.7% expressing that sustainability would still not be a priority for the security industry. The majority of survey participants (22.9%) anticipate that manufacturers will be able to attract a broader customer base and stand out in the market by clearly demonstrating their eco-conscious features, branding and certifications. They also expected to anticipate and prepare for stricter government regulations in the near future (22.6%). Another 22.6% indicated that technology advancements will make greener products less expensive, making them more accessible to a wider audience. This would potentially create a self-reinforcing cycle. Accessible pricing encourages more users to use eco-friendly products, resulting in increased energy and cost savings, thus perpetuating the cycle of sustainability and business benefits.

Navigating the Future: Smart Cities and Transportation’s Harmonious Blend for Urban Mobility
Chandrika Behl, Managing Director, Exhibitions India Group In the ever-expanding landscape of urbanisation, smart cities have emerged as a pivotal solution to address the challenges posed by rapid population growth and escalating urban demands. At the core of this paradigm shift lies the need for a well-integrated and efficient transportation system to ensure seamless urban mobility. ‘Smart’ Transportation for Modern Cities Urbanisation has brought about an unprecedented surge in the demand for sustainable transportation. Worldwide, cities are leveraging technology to create intelligent transportation ecosystems that cater to the diverse needs of their residents. Transportation in Smart Cities is not just about moving people from point A to point B; it is about creating an interconnected network that optimises efficiency, minimises congestion, and reduces environmental impact. Achieving seamless integration in urban mobility involves harnessing technology to connect various modes of transportation, making the entire system more responsive and user-friendly. One cornerstone of this integration is the adoption of smart public transportation systems. Advanced technologies such as real-time tracking, automated payment systems, and data analytics enable cities to enhance the reliability and accessibility of public transport. Commuters benefit from timely information, streamlined ticketing processes, and optimised routes, leading to a more efficient and sustainable urban transit experience. Furthermore, integrating alternative transportation modes is pivotal in a Smart City’s mobility strategy. This includes promoting cycling, walking, and micro-mobility solutions such as electric two-, three-, and four-wheelers. By seamlessly incorporating these options into the urban fabric, cities reduce traffic congestion and contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment. Intelligent Traffic Management shaping Urban Mobility Smart cities are increasingly investing in intelligent traffic management systems. These systems utilise real-time data from sensors and cameras to optimise traffic flow, mitigate congestion, and improve overall road safety. Adaptive traffic signals, for instance, dynamically adjust signal timings based on current traffic conditions, reducing wait times and fuel consumption. The integration of smart parking solutions is another facet of enhancing urban mobility. Real-time parking availability information and automated payment systems ease the parking process for users. Conclusion Data interoperability and open standards are crucial elements in achieving seamless integration. Smart cities emphasise the importance of breaking down data silos to enable different systems and modes of transportation to communicate effectively. This interoperability facilitates a holistic view of urban mobility, allowing for better-informed decision-making and resource allocation. The concept of Smart Cities is intricately linked with the transformation of urban transportation. Achieving seamless integration in urban mobility is more than adding layers of complexity; it’s about simplifying and optimising existing systems. By leveraging technology, promoting alternative modes of transportation, and emphasising data interoperability, cities can create a cohesive and efficient transportation ecosystem that addresses the evolving needs of its residents. As urbanisation continues to shape our cities, integrating smart transportation solutions remains paramount in ensuring a sustainable and accessible future for urban mobility. Honeywell Aids in The Alternative Fuel Transition Through Safety Technologies
Latest infrared-based flame detector helps make industrial facilities producing hydrogen safer Honeywell recently announced a new infrared-based (IR) technology that quickly and reliably detects hydrogen flames – before they grow into major fires. Honeywell’s FS24X Plus Flame Detector helps protect workers and facilities from risks associated with hydrogen production and use. Hydrogen is highly flammable, colorless, odorless and 14 times lighter than air.1 There is no known odorant that can be added to hydrogen that is light enough to ‘travel’ along with it, which makes a leak imperceptible to the human senses. “Clean hydrogen has a much lower carbon impact than traditional energy sources and has great potential when it comes to powering our future,” said Sarah Martin, President of Honeywell Sensing & Safety Technologies, “By innovating in technologies that help safeguard hydrogen facilities and workers, we are driving further use of hydrogen as both a fuel source and a method of energy storage.” Hydrogen fuel cells, which generate electricity, heat and water, can be used to provide power to homes and other buildings as well as electric vehicles. The Energy Transitions Commission projects hydrogen will be the source of 13% of final energy demand in 2050 and reach a market value of $2.5 trillion or more. This is incredibly promising for the future of clean energy as hydrogen can be produced from diverse domestic resources and has the potential for near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. When hydrogen is burned in a fuel cell, the primary byproduct is water vapor. Flame and gas detectors – particularly those like the FS24X Plus that can detect flames even in rainy, foggy or smoky conditions – are important components of a comprehensive safety program for industrial facilities using hydrogen. Today, hydrogen is critical to our infrastructure, from oil refineries and power plants to chemical production facilities making ammonia and fertilizer. As a byproduct, hydrogen can also be found in data centers, battery production plants and wastewater facilities. Honeywell (www.honeywell.com) delivers industry-specific solutions that include aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings and industry; and performance materials globally. Our technologies help aircraft, buildings, manufacturing plants, supply chains, and workers become more connected to make our world smarter, safer, and more sustainable. gov, Safety, Codes and Standards [Accessed, September 18, 2023] RMI, Clean Energy 101: The Colors of Hydrogen [Accessed September 18, 2023]
