NICE Enhancing Markets Surveillance Solution

MiFID II, which went into effect on January 3, requires firms to monitor communications and transactions for market abuse and sets a higher bar for high frequency trading, requiring such trading activity to be monitored at the microsecond level. Firms that do not comply with this stipulation risk fines, or worse, reputational damage if market abuse goes undetected. To address this, NICE Actimize has enhanced its market surveillance solution to help firms comply with the MiFID II microsecond requirement, while improving firms’ ability to detect and mitigate market abuse. High frequency trading (HFT), a type of trading that uses computers to execute large volumes of orders at very fast speeds, is prone to market manipulation because programs and algorithms can be easily altered by a single ‘bad actor’ with malicious intentions. While the volume and velocity of high-speed, automated trading can make market abuse more difficult to detect, the resulting impact can be extremely damaging. Small price manipulations can net enormous profits for an unscrupulous individual over condensed time periods. MiFID II’s microsecond requirement was created to address this very problem. NICE Actimize’s markets surveillance solution enables firms to adhere to the MiFID II microsecond requirement by: Ingesting transactional and trade records from order management and execution management systems at the microsecond level for all high frequency trades, and; Analyzing high frequency trading data at the microsecond level to detect market abuse. The solution uses NICE Actimize’s best-in-class detection analytics (e.g., for insider trading, ramping, spoofing, layering, quote stuffing, momentum ignition, front running etc.), and because the analytics are run on data captured at the microsecond level, detection accuracy is increased while false positives are reduced. “Because high frequency trading is executed in extremely high volumes at extremely rapid speeds, it really demands greater granularity and precision with respect to monitoring transactions,” said Chris Wooten, Executive Vice President, NICE, “With NICE Actimize’s market surveillance solution, firms can have complete confidence in their ability to comply with the MiFID II microsecond requirement around monitoring high frequency trades, while safeguarding their firms’ reputations from the scourge of market abuse.”

SPC Connect 2.6

Customer notifications Installers will now be able to communicate through the SPC Connect network directly to their customers. This feature will allow the users to create a message that will appear directly in the user’s app and/ or in their email. The messaging editor provides editing capabilities and the inclusion of links. The installer can also download the list of all customers interested in their message. User restrictions This enhancement is intended to give the security company greater control of the level of service they wish to offer through SPC Connect. The function allows the security company to define what operations are permitted by a user such as blocking email, blocking push notification, blocking alarm verification, blocking mobile app, and blocking verification web. Alarm verification via mobile devices If an SPC panel is part of an SPC Connect installer account, then a new feature will activate on the user device that will allow the user to view verification data. If the SPC panel is not part of a company, or the company has chosen to block this feature, then the users of that panel will not see any change. When this enhancement is enabled, when an alarm occurs that has verification, the user will be able to view the data and talk and listen live to site.

Smiths Detection HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Scanner Granted EDS CB C2 Approval

Smiths Detection releases its first checkpoint scanner with innovative Computed Tomography (CT) technology, following approval by ECAC for EDS CB C2 – testing for C3 will follow swiftly. CT is a complete game-changer for checkpoint security as, using the company’s proprietary technology, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX can allow electronic devices to stay in bags, addressing the three critical issues for airport operators: security, efficiency and passenger experience. Delivering improved productivity, higher throughput and lower costs, this impressive scanner eliminates the need to remove electronic devices from hand luggage (subject to approval from the appropriate local authorities). This reduces the number of trays per person and makes the whole process simpler and shorter – a move sure to please the travelling public. Baggage contents are examined from every angle and 3D images are generated with very precise data so more accurate judgements can be made on substances within the bag. “The future really is here for checkpoint security,” observed Matt Clark, VP Technology & Product Development, “Integrating the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX into a smart checkpoint with the latest lane design and software will revolutionise the screening process and passenger experience. And we can also look beyond the C3 hurdle as CT is also the only technology likely to meet a potential, higher C4 standard. Before long, new algorithms may well be used to identify a range of additional prohibited items and materials.” To minimise upgrade costs, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX can easily be incorporated into existing checkpoint lanes. The addition of an advanced screening and management platform such as Smiths Detection’s Checkpoint. Evoplus, will streamline operations even further by providing remote screening and directed search; as well as providing access to valuable management data.

F-Secure Aviation Cyber Security Services

Trust is everything in the aviation industry. A successful cyber attack – even a minor one against something like an in-flight entertainment system – could undermine confidence in airlines or even the entire aviation industry. That’s why global cyber security provider F-Secure has launched a specialized Aviation Cyber Security Services offering that’s designed to help airlines and similar organizations protect their aircraft, infrastructure, data and reputations. Cyber security has emerged as a significant issue for many industries, including those working in aviation. 85 percent of airline CEOs identified cyber security as a significant risk in a 2015 survey. While many industries have been dealing with data breaches and cyber attacks for many years, FSecure’s Hugo Teso says that changes in the aviation industry bring new risks for the airlines. “Off-the-shelf communication technologies are finding their way into aircraft, which makes security much more complicated than in the past,” said Teso, a former pilot and current head of F-Secure’s Aviation Cyber Security Services, “Because these off-the-shelf technologies weren’t necessarily created to meet the rigorous safety requirements of airlines, the aviation industry is making cyber security a top priority. But they need a partner that understands both cyber security and the details of airline operations, because it’s an industry where those details make a big difference.” F-Secure’s Aviation Cyber Security Services was designed to help airlines and other companies working in aviation secure their operations from the ground up. It integrates security assessments of avionics, ground systems and data links, vulnerability scanners, security monitoring, incident response services, and specialized cyber security trainings for IT managers as well as cabin and cockpit crews, into a single package that helps airlines harden their operations against cyber attacks. Security assessments play a vital role in aviation cyber security by flagging potential issues before airlines or manufacturers who attempt to certify devices or services for use. Security assessments can focus on individual components such as specific pieces of hardware and software, or broader issues such as how different systems interact with one another in an entire aircraft program. F-Secure’s head of Hardware Security Andrea Barisani works with a team of experts that has nearly a decade of experience in performing security assessments for avionics and aircraft manufacturers, and places particular focus on designing and verifying data diodes which is a defense mechanism that mitigates worst case scenarios by restricting how an aircraft’s systems can communicate with one another. “A key issue we help organizations with is how to protect an aircraft’s safety-critical systems from compromises in systems that are, in a sense, more exposed but less significant to an airplane’s operations,” said Barisani, “A key protection measure is separating systems into different ‘trust domains,’ and then controlling how systems in different domains can interact with one another. This prevents security issues in one domain, like a Wi-Fi service accessible to passengers, from affecting safety-critical systems, like aircraft controls or air to ground datalinks.” But the service isn’t limited to simply assessing different technologies or components. According to Teso, the offering aims to help airlines achieve long term security for all their operations and systems. “In aviation, trust is everything, and airlines know that if they lose trust they lose business. And even though cyber security is a relatively new concern for them, they understand that they need to get on top of problems right away and stay ahead of potential issues as technologies, operations, and threats evolve,” said Teso, “The overlap between security and safety is 100 percent clear to airlines, so even an attack that’s not intended to affect the safety of an aircraft in reality – like hacking into a database to steal passenger data – is an unacceptable risk that threatens to undermine customer confidence in other operations.”
