Securing ATMs 24/7 with Intelligent Security Technology

ATMs have become a cornerstone for the day-to-day life of millions, but they are vulnerable to attacks. The global ATM Industry Association has reported a 12% increase in ATM crimes during 2017. Attacks often involve ATM users, potentially injuring them, and thereby causing them trauma. Since ATMs are mostly situated outside buildings and are made to use at all the times of a day and night, securing them is a challenge – and therefore banks are turning to more intelligent solutions. An outdoor vulnerability According to ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), there is an estimation of about 3.5 million ATMs in the world serving those in need of cash 24/7, 365 days a year. This, coupled with the fact that they hold hard cash, makes them an attractive target. Criminals target these machines, or more precisely, the people using them in numerous ways. They distract customers at ATMs in an attempt to take their cards or cash, or to steal their PINs for later use. At cases, they also install false card readers that sneak customer’s card details for reuse. On the other side of the story, banks need to deal with customers’ disputes. In the situation of a very small percentage of ATM transactions, customers question whether the transaction has been carried out as requested – or even dispute at all in real time for any error while making the withdrawal. Thus, security precautions for ATMs are an important part of an overall security solution for financial institutions. When deep learning technology steps in Inside an ATM machine, two covert cameras are installed – one trained on the user and the other on the ATM panel. Deep learning technology embedded in the ATM security system can detect any ‘abnormalities’ in the facial scene in front of it, referring to the existing data patterns. So, if there is another face in the picture (for example someone looking over a user’s shoulder, or if the person wearing a mask), an alarm can be triggered in the security center. By using the same technology, the security system can also flag if the number pad is covered with a strip to steal PIN codes, or if a false card reader (or ‘skimmer’) is present to steal card details. All of these ‘smart’ alarms streamline the security monitoring processes, meaning that security personnel can react to real-time scenarios and would not waste time on false alarms. The footage can also provide evidence for any investigation. Hikvision solution Hikvision DeepinMind NVR – a robust deep learning ‘engine’ – takes information from the camera and analyses it using deep learning algorithms. This also ‘manages’ footage in conjunction with other NVRs and a video management system, providing a powerful toolset for security and business intelligence. Securing assets and mitigating risks through security solution is a lot easier with deep learning technology. Even ATMs outside a building can be safer, avoiding fraud and protecting customers every day.

FICCI Conference on Countering Rogue Drones

The gold rush of the 19th century brought together people from all economic strata. It brought investors, opportunists, miners, entrepreneurs, law enforcers and law breakers together to a single location. There was a law of the land but implementation of that law was a challenge. The modern drone industry portrays a similar lay of the land. There is a gold mine of potential applications and business opportunities. This has attracted participants from multiple industries to provide business solutions. India has the law of the land in terms of regulations for drone e.g., unarmed aircraft system (UAS) ownership and operations; and the land also has the entrepreneurs and large firms – the law abiders and law breakers – and the entities who wish to misuse technology. The Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has recently organized a conference on ‘Countering Rogue Drones’ in New Delhi, which received impressing response from the industry and other stakeholders including the government. The government officials who presented themselves there and shared their parts included Rakesh Asthaana, Director General, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and Sanjay Jaju, Joint Secretary, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, Government of India. “Government to soon identify key counter drone technologies for critical installations.” – Rakesh Asthaana DG, BCAS, GoI Mr. Asthaana indicated that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is working on finding solutions to counter rogue drones in the country. He said, “The Ministry of Civil Aviation had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of DG-BCAS for finding out the best available counter drone solutions and standards to safeguard civil aviation against possible drone attacks in India. We have taken the live trials – second pilot has just been over – and we are in the process of finalizing our reports which will be submitted to the Ministry soon.” “We don’t know which drone is rogue and which is good. We should have technology to counter it. Whether you go in for commercial or security purposes, the technology has to be such that can prevent the rogue drones in our country,” added Mr. Asthaana, “Drones can be used both for the betterment of the society and for killing people as well and destroying assets.” “Focus on indigenization of drone manufacturing and counter drone solutions” – Sanjay Jaju Joint Secretary, DDP, MoD, GoI Sanjay Jaju said, “The drone technology has immense potential, and as per NITI Aayog, the sector is likely to reach $50 billion in the next 15 years.” Calling for indigenization of drone manufacturing and counter drone solutions, Mr. Jaju emphasized that local manufacturing should be done not only to derive economic potential but also to check the internal and external threats faced by the country. “Some thought also has to be given to counter drone systems that not just target the drones but actually target or find ways and means of locating the person who is actually operating them “ – Ankit Mehta Co-Chair, FICCI Committee on Drones, and Co-founder & CEO, IdeaForge “If we can manufacture world class drones within the country, we can obviously manufacture world class counter drone measures. Otherwise what will happen is that the dependence on global market will continue for the anti-drone measures as it is for drones currently,” he noted. Lt Gen Sanjeev Madhok (Retd.), Co-Chair, FICCI Committee on Drones, and Head, Defence Business, Dynamatic Technologies said, “Drones have effectively disrupted business and operating models. They have empowered organizations and enabled them to capture real-time, highly accurate data in the most cost-effective manner.” A FICCI-EY report on ‘Countering Rogue Drones’ was also released during the conference which emphasizes the needs to deploy counter UAV systems.
