Tenable Research Finds New Vulnerabilities in Popular Blink Smart Security Cameras

Tenable® research team has discovered seven severe vulnerabilities in Amazon- owned Blink XT2 security camera systems. If exploited, the vulnerabilities could give attackers full control of an affected device, allowing them to remotely view camera footage, listen to audio output and hijack the device for use in a botnet to perform, for example, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, steal data or send spam. According to Strategy Analytics, over 50 million smart home cameras were sold in 2018. However, these devices are also a potential gateway for bad actors to gain access to personal information and home networks. If exploited, the flaws in Blink XT2 allow an attacker to obtain sensitive information about the owner’s account, enabling them to view stored photographs and videos, add or remove devices from the account or block camera communications entirely. “Connected devices, like Blink cameras, are everywhere. Precisely for that reason, cybercriminals are focused on compromising them,” said Renaud Deraison, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Tenable, “Manufacturers of IoT devices have an opportunity and an obligation to ensure that effective security is baked into the overall design from the start and not bolted on as an afterthought. This is especially critical when the device in question is a security camera. We thank Amazon for collaborating with us in this disclosure to ensure patches were released in a timely manner. Tenable Research continues to identify and disclose vulnerabilities across enterprise and consumer technology to keep everyone more secure.” As the attack surface expands with the adoption of connected devices, including IoT and operational technology (OT), foundational cybersecurity is paramount. Tenable is leading the charge by building the largest vulnerability intelligence knowledge base in the industry and one of the largest security research teams, which has surpassed its 100th zero-day discovery in 2019. Its extensive vulnerability research and expertise spans beyond traditional IT and includes everything from critical infrastructure to enterprise applications. Tenable works alongside vendors and the entire security community to identify, disclose and patch vulnerable technology to keep organizations and their customers more secure. Amazon has released patches for the vulnerabilities and users are urged to confirm their device is updated to firmware version 2.13.11 or later.

NICE 2019 Global Digital Evidence Management Benchmark Study

Survey of FBINAA members and other police executives confirmed the critical need for digital evidence management transformation As digital evidence continues to grow, the challenges of collecting, analyzing and sharing it only get more complex. NICE has published its Digital Evidence Management Benchmark Study which illuminates the top concerns of managing digital evidence. The study highlights the results of an extensive survey of FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. (FBINAA) members and other police executives. “With ever-expanding digital evidence comes the need for true digital transformation,” said Chris Wooten, Executive Vice President, NICE, “Today, evidence is increasingly digital, but investigative processes around collecting, analyzing and sharing evidence have not adapted to the digital age. This is a major concern for forces worldwide. That’s why we undertook this survey of FBINAA members and other police executives.” The NICE Digital Evidence Management Benchmark Study results were aligned with another digital evidence management benchmark study that NICE conducted with UK-based CoPaCC in 2018 titled Digital Evidence Management: User Perspectives. Among the key results of the more recent NICE Benchmark Study conducted in cooperation with the FBINAA: ● 66% of respondents acknowledged ‘driving around to collect CCTV video from homes and businesses’ and ‘copying and burning CDs and DVDs’ as the most time-consuming aspects of the criminal investigation process. ● 52% ranked manual handling of evidence on DVDs, CDs, thumb drives and paper case files among their greatest evidence management challenges. Challenges with collecting and preparing CCTV video came in a close second. ● All survey respondents reported having to log into and work in a large number of data silos and systems which impacts the speed and accuracy of investigations. ● 33% were concerned that when using the current investigative processes they could miss a crucial piece of digital evidence that should have been shared as part of case disclosure. ● 62% said they were actively looking for a solution to their digital evidence management challenges and nearly a quarter had already allocated resources and funding to acquire new digital evidence management technology. “The NICE Digital Evidence Management Benchmark Study reveals there is substantial consensus among departments, not only around the challenges of managing digital evidence but more importantly around the need to develop effective strategies to improve investigative workflows,” added Wooten, “As a one-stop solution for automating manual processes around the collection, management, analysis and sharing of all types of digital evidence, our NICE Investigate solution addresses the law enforcement pain points uncovered in this research by helping agencies accelerate their digital transformation.”

BrainChip & TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES Present Jointly a Demonstration Featuring Akida Neuromorphic Technology Platform (NeurIPS 2019)

BrainChip Holdings Ltd., a leading provider of ultra-low power, high performance edge AI technology, has been accepted to present a demonstration featuring its Akida™ Neuromorphic System-on-Chip Technology, recognizing and classifying hand gestures from the audience at the 33rd Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), at the Vancouver Convention Center in Vancouver, Canada. The paper titled ‘Human Gesture Recognition using Spiking Input on Akida Neuromorphic Platform’ co-authored by Sounak Dey, Arijit Mukherjee from TCS Research at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Gilles Bézard, Douglas McLelland from BrainChip will be presented. The demonstration will involve capturing a few hand gestures and hand positions from the audience using a dynamic vision sensor camera and performing live learning and classification using the Akida neuromorphic platform. This will showcase the fast and lightweight unsupervised live learning capability of the spiking neural network (SNN) and the Akida neuromorphic chip, which takes much less data than a traditional deep neural network (DNN) counterpart, consuming much less power during training. Akida is available as a licensable IP technology that can be integrated into ASIC devices and will be available as an integrated SoC, both suitable for applications such as surveillance, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicles (AV), vision guided robotics, drones, augmented and virtual reality (AR/ VR), acoustic analysis, and Industrial Internet-of-Things (IoT). Akida performs neural processing and memory accesses on the edge, which vastly reduces the computing resources required of the system host CPU. This unprecedented efficiency not only delivers faster results, it consumes only a tiny fraction of the power resources of traditional AI processing. Functions like training, learning, and inferencing are orders of magnitude more efficient with Akida. “While the recognition of a simple hand gesture might at first seem simple, it is in fact quite a revolutionary advance in the state of today’s human and robot interactive environments,” said Roger Levinson, COO of BrainChip, “We are pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the extent of this revolutionary advance at NeurIPS and are eager to show how an Akida-based platform can be utilized to ingest imagery, train the system to recognize what it has seen and learn in a way that is vastly more efficient and accurate than what other solutions have been able to achieve thus far.” NeurIPS is held to foster the exchange of research on neural information processing systems in their biological, technological, mathematical, and theoretical aspects. The core focus is peer-reviewed novel research which is presented and discussed in the general session, along with invited talks by leaders in their field.
