Dahua Eureka Series: An Entry-level Early Detection Solution for Waste Fire

Recycling and waste sites are places prone to huge fire hazards due to some potentially flammable materials, inherent risks during disposal process as well as other environmental factors. In particular, battery-related waste fires have become a growing challenge facing the global recycling and waste management sector today. A new report jointly produced by Eunomia and the Environmental Services Association (ESA) estimates that of all the average 300 waste fires in UK each year, approximately 48% are believed to have been caused by Lithium-ion batteries, with a total annual cost of about £158 million. Considering the destructive consequences of waste fires on both the environment and society, an early detection solution is crucial for fire prevention and early fire control. However, traditional detection technologies and devices such as smoke detectors (video, laser etc.) often detect the fire source only after it has already developed, making it difficult to control and extinguish the fire in time. Therefore, a new technology is needed to realize early detection of fire source. As a world-leading video-centric smart IoT solution and service provider, Dahua Technology adopts the latest thermal technology to empower its economical Eureka Series – Thermal Mini Hybrid Camera with early fire source detection function. Together with on-site alarm linkage, overheating detection, smoking behavior detection, equipment condition monitoring and other intelligent features, this series provides a proactive entry-level fire prevention solution for waste operators and plant owners. Early Heat Source Detection Equipped with a ‘thermal eye,’ the Dahua Eureka Series can find what traditional surveillance cameras can’t see – heat source. Based on temperature measurement, this high-performance thermal camera can detect a potential fire hazard such as sudden temperature rise or abnormal temperature exceeding a given threshold (e.g., 80°C). By giving early warning signals, it can help prevent occurrence of fire and allow timely response before a fire develops and spreads. Real-time Fire Signature Alert The Dahua Eureka series activates the alarm as soon as an abnormal temperature is detected. It is significantly earlier and faster than a regular smoke detector alarm, especially in a relatively large space where the smoke takes a long time to reach the top. Combined with the built-in active deterrence system of the camera, the on-site personnel will also be notified in time through white light and audible alarm. Visual Fire Source Location By utilizing the powerful penetration ability of thermal technology, the Dahua Eureka series can accurately spot the location of the fire source even when surrounded by smoke. It can clearly capture images showing the temperature distribution and hot spots in the monitored scene. These thermal images guide on-site personnel in efficiently extinguishing the fire source before it spreads out of control. Smoking Behavior Detection For smoking behavior inside waste transfer stations, traditional cameras and detectors are unlikely to detect cigarette smoking and warn the smoker in time because the smoke is too small. The Dahua Eureka Series thermal camera adopts deep-learning algorithm that can identify suspicious smoking behavior by analyzing human postures and cigarette temperature. In addition, the camera uses white light and audible alarms as active deterrents to directly warn the detected smoker. Machinery Overheating Detection The Dahua Eureka series is also suitable for continuously tracking and monitoring the heat and temperature of conveyor, bearing, motor as well as other equipment to ensure the safe operation of waste stations and factories. When machinery overheating is detected, an alarm will be activated and sent to relevant personnel to inform them of any possible malfunction and fire risk. All-weather 24/7 Monitoring Featuring perimeter protection, the Dahua Eureka series can automatically detect and locate intrusion and other possible threats in a variety of harsh environments in real time, and can capture clear images even in total darkness. It provides 24/7 uninterrupted monitoring for waste facilities and factories generally located in remote areas with poor surrounding light condition, which fully improves the overall security level in the area. As an entry-level product of the Dahua thermal family, the Eureka Series serves as a cost-effective early detection system for fire risks. Its long-distance detection capability enables it to measure temperatures ranging from 1-15 meters, which is ideal for large and spacious indoor facilities such as waste transfer stations, warehouses and plants. In addition to fire prevention, it can also be used to detect vessels and people in bodies of water, cell phone usage at gas stations as well as a wide range of small and medium-sized business applications.

Video Systems: X-Factor Technology Explained

Image quality is vital when you strive to deliver industry-leading video systems that harness the power to predict. When combined with built-in AI, enhanced imaging quality enables more relevant data to support predictive solutions in security and beyond. Cameras are often challenged to capture images and fast-moving objects in changing lighting conditions ranging from bright sunlight to dimly lit or low-light conditions. At the same time, an increasing percentage of noise may occur, leading to grainy images and a loss of detail that may obscure the desired information. With next-level starlight X and HDR X technologies from Bosch, light sensitivity is vastly improved and motion blur eliminated, enabling X series cameras from Bosch to overcome these typical challenges day and night. Excellent imaging with starlight X Starlight technology from Bosch has long been the gold standard in low-light video performance, enabling Bosch cameras to capture color detail even when light levels drop to near zero. Now, Bosch brings starlight X technology with next-level light sensitivity technology to provide clear and relevant images regardless of lighting conditions, time of day, or object movement. Starlight X combines large pixel sensors, advanced image processing, and noise suppression algorithms to significantly improve sensitivity over regular starlight cameras. It provides more detail due to lower noise and ensures color images down to 0.0061 lux due to its new custom optics. This new technology also boosts monochrome sensitivity to the next level to offer improved performance in extreme lowlight scenes. By capturing maximum detail in challenging scenes, starlight X enables Intelligent Video Analytics to provide even more relevant data that supports informed decisions. Low light comparison of starlight to starlight X in 1080p resolution Low light comparison of anoth Motion-optimized HDR X Standard HDR technology combines multiple images with different exposure times to increase the overall dynamic range ensuring the capture of detailed images in scenes that have both light and dark areas. HDR X, a combination of large pixel sensors, custom-optics, and Bosch imaging algorithms, generates two readouts from one short exposure with different gain levels. This lens-sensor combination generates a High Dynamic Range frame without any HDR blur and artefacts. The result is an enhanced dynamic range (up to 144dB) that is motion-optimized to capture the highest level of detail in challenging scenes with both dark and bright areas, while eliminating blur and artefacts caused by the movement of objects.

Video Security in SME Market is Getting More Intelligent and Connected

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may not be as large as companies in the enterprise market, but they are equally important in contributing revenue to the economy. According to World Bank, formal SMEs contribute up to 40% of national income (GDP) in emerging economies. They represent about 90% of businesses and more than 50% of employment worldwide. SMEs grapple with tight budgets, fewer administrative resources, and lack of in-house IT talent, particularly in the face of the unique challenges brought on by the pandemic. However, in truth, with the technology being matured and more products available in the marketplace resulting in cost reductions, the security goals of SMEs are evolving and getting more advanced. Gaining a proactive approach with AI Security installers around the world have been asked for optimal solutions that can help SMEs balance budget and security needs. With a lack of administrative resources, it is less likely for SME customers to have dedicated security personnel to look after daily security operation and management. Sometimes when a security breach occurs and loss suffered, there could be a gap in security for a considerable amount of time until they have noticed it. Today, technology has taken video intelligence to the next level with increased accuracy and performance, thanks to AI development and deep learning algorithms. There are many industries and markets where AI already is making an impact in significant ways, including SMEs who used to be faced with thousands of recorded videos finding evidence of an event. Now, they can enjoy real-time and accurate alerts with fewer distractions. They also gain a proactive approach by identifying potential hazards before they happen – and all this at only a small incremental cost to their business. One example is the use of Hikvision’s security devices with AcuSense technology powered by AI. AcuSense works to distinguish between human, vehicle and other objects using its smart algorithms. This means it can filter out security alerts associated with human (and/ or vehicle) only triggered those for further attention and action. This greatly helps SME customers save on the overall labor cost that could otherwise be used for business improvement. Seeing with clarity and color Video systems have embraced the evolution of resolution for some time – from 480 to 720 pixels to 1080 pixels, and now 4K. People want to see more and see more detail when they are needed. For SME customers, this is not an area they would risk compromising in a security system. Why? Imagine if they find a video clip containing key evidence of an event, but the video images are grainy and unclear. This would make it difficult to see a face, or to distinguish the color of clothing or of an automobile. All efforts would be in vain. Research shows that color is important to aid clarity, improving object recognition.2 It also shows us that in the CCTV world, there is a ‘strong correlation’ between camera performance and color fidelity.3 The ability to see detail and color in the dark is one of the most important aspects of a security camera and there are many technical factors that influence this ability. For example, the sensitivity of the image sensor, the lens aperture, and applied image processing. Today’s new technologies have empowered modern video cameras to see better in any light and in high resolution. Hikvision’s security cameras with its signature ColorVu technology are a great example of this. They guarantee video with colorful details even in extremely dark scenarios. A next-generation series of the cameras goes even further, using 4K Ultra high definition (UHD) to deliver crisp images that provide richer detail. Checking in remotely and respond promptly The enhanced ease of connectivity and scalable bandwidth made possible by cloud technology is stimulating more companies, including SMEs, to connect a lot more video security cameras to their networks. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/300805341_The_Contribution_of_Color_to_Object_Recognition https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228540075_Colour_analysis_and_verification_of_CCTV_images_under_different_lighting_conditions Having all the security systems and data tucked in an IT closet is no longer in the best interests of many SMEs. Push notifications, remote viewing of video, and cloud services are now mainstream for SME customers and their security solutions must support these capabilities. Among others, Hikvision’s Hik-Connect app offers seamless connection with all its security devices, allowing SME customers to view real-time videos, playback, and receive event notifications remotely wherever they are. This means they can monitor remotely, or even open a door with audio communication for example. This really saves SME customers some time as they go about their busy day. Looking to the future Beyond security and monitoring use cases, SME companies are taking advantage of a raft of new technologies like AI, cloud service, technological convergence to undertake a range of tasks. Whether it is by utilizing a proactive security approach to look after their people and assets, or by upgrading their standard security system to high definition to look clearer and act precisely. Or expanding the system with audio, intercom and access control to automate processes. Or keeping a watchful eye on their day-to-day business operations remotely. All in all, they are quick to seize on the possibilities offered by today’s next-generation video systems to maximize return on investment (RoI) with the lowest cost of ownership. With international organizations such as the World Bank lending more services and improving their access to finance, SMEs will continue to grow and embrace more possibilities. Zero Trust: The Only Protection Model for Businesses in the New Normal

Akamai, one of the world’s most trusted solutions to power and protect digital experiences, recently shared how the Zero Trust model is the present and future of online security, delivering significant business value in addition to being a first line of defense against cybercriminals. The insights come on the back of the recently concluded Akamai Zero Trust Journey Roundtable series in India. During the event, Akamai shared how important it is for organisations to adopt a Zero Trust network architecture to protect enterprise data, wherever users and devices are, whilst also ensuring that applications work quickly and seamlessly without any downtime. This is particularly important as COVID-19 work from home policies have resulted in employees using more personal devices. Siddharth Pisharoti, RVP, India & SEA region, Akamai said, “At Akamai, we regularly observe enterprises suffering from cyberattacks that could have easily been thwarted using a Zero Trust approach. While it may sound scary or difficult to implement, Zero Trust is truly more than a defensive strategy, and can bring many business benefits, helping modernize cybersecurity and provide business and IT leaders the peaceof-mind they need.” Unrelenting assault by cybercriminals Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, cybersecurity incidents continue to rise globally. As the world’s largest and most distributed edge platform, Akamai analyses over 300 terabytes of new attack data per day. Through this analysis, Akamai has noted record-breaking highs in attack vectors such as: Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks: Akamai mitigated 1900+ DDos attacks in Q1 2021, marking a 34 percent year-on-year increase. Credential abuse: 63 billion credential abuse attacks were identified in Q1 2021, a whopping 133 percent increase. Application layer attacks: Over two billion Web Access Firewall (WAF) alerts were triggered in Q1 2021, a 70 percent year-onyear jump. In light of these startling numbers, Akamai’s CEO, Tom Leighton urged businesses to move away from traditional perimeter defense strategies and protect internal apps the same way they protect external facing apps – as if there was no perimeter. Zero Trust: More than a line of defense but a mindset and approach for the future Akamai’s platform data shows that cybercrime is increasingly lucrative, and that cybercriminals are becoming more sophisticated. At the same, the cybersecurity industry is highly fragmented, making it challenging for businesses to choose the right cybersecurity solutions. Here, the Zero Trust mindset comes in. Zero Trust is a network security model, based on a strict identity verification process, using the principle of least privilege. The framework dictates that only authenticated and authorized users and devices can access applications and data, ensuring that applications are never exposed. At the same time, it protects those applications and users from advanced threats on the Internet. At Akamai’s APJ Zero Trust Journey Roundtable series, the company’s CIO, Mani Sundaram shared more about the business’ adoption of this path-breaking security approach and why all organisations should be on the same journey. He also underscored how Zero Trust is more than a line of defense, but instead can benefit businesses by reducing IT complexity, providing greater network visibility, reducing the IT security workload, improving data protection and most importantly, improving user experience. Akamai’s mission is to make the internet fast, intelligent and secure. Zero Trust is a network security model, based on a strict identity verification process. The framework dictates that only authenticated and authorized users and devices can access applications and data. At the same time, it protects those applications and users from advanced threats on the Internet. This model was first introduced by an analyst at Forrester Research and although not entirely a new theory, it has become more and more important for modern day digital transformation and its impact on business network security architecture. Akamai powers and protects life online. The most innovative companies worldwide choose Akamai to secure and deliver their digital experiences – helping billions of people live, work, and play every day. With the world’s largest and most trusted edge platform, Akamai keeps apps, code, and experiences closer to users than anyone – and threats farther away.
