Security by Design or by Numbers? Designing of Physical Security System

Anil Puri CMD, APS group A second generation entrepreneur, thought leader and an action catalyzer rolled into one – Anil Puri is a rare combination of a visionary, and one who has mastered the art of strategic and tactical thinking to the core. He has been using this combination to seed new ideas and to lead them to their implementation on-ground. This has been a consistent feature of his career. He has rich experience of approximately 35 years in corporate in diverse domains & from functional managerial level to apex as chairman of a corporate group. PSA came to him as a part of inheritance and by choice. He at times spends part of his time in listening to his ops team in their due diligence in understanding the nitty – gritty of the PSS or security design of the client premises. Most of the time his niche experience and deep understanding of the PSS is of immense value to the ops team in unwinding the folds of the system. INTRODUCTION Security standards are heavily context dependent and tailored to the needs of the company and/ or region. Whether it is heavy crime, militias or corruption, security by design (SBD) is needed to protect assets and to ensure that a company continues operating without interference. When a project is in its infant stages with low exposure, the companies take little to no heed, but it is of the utmost importance that your business is prepared for potential risks when the wheels of your project start turning full throttle. PHYSICAL SECURITY & CYBER SECURITY – WHY CONVERGENCE MIRRORS THE PILLARING EFFECT? Cybersecurity/ digital security has become the watchword of the day. Having stepped into the 21st century, the world is heavily dependent on IT infrastructure for carrying out everyday business operations. Be it monetary transactions or information exchange, digital platforms today dominate the world stage. Naturally, digital data has taken the center stage in the grand scheme of things – with more and more devices coming online due to the advent of technologies such as wearables and IoT, and this volume of data is only going to increase. Due to the rather sensitive nature of digital infrastructure, businesses are investing heavily in ensuring the digital security of their IT assets, and with newer, more sophisticated threats on the horizon, this is only to be expected. Malicious elements on the internet are regularly amping up their repertoire of attack techniques. Ransomware, DDoS, and spyware are just some of the many weapons in the arsenal of these malicious players. In order to protect IT resources from such attacks, companies are prepared to invest time as well as money. But are our present security measures enough? True, you can put in place advanced digital security structures, create digital safety and hygiene protocols, and deploy state-ofthe-art technology to ensure that your assets are digitally protected. All this overlooks one of the main chinks in the cyber security armour – the Physical Security. Consider this – you have implemented all the encryption in the world, you’ve created a digitally insulated system that cannot be penetrated by digital means. What if a fire happens to ravage your data servers? Or any unauthorized personnel gains access to secure areas of your computing infrastructure? What happens next? Physical security was, is, and will remain one of the prime avenues by which your cyber infrastructures can and should be adequately protected. Keeping your organization safe against physical attacks is essential to safeguarding your digital assets. This not only helps reduce the risks to your IT infrastructure but also contributes towards protecting your employees as well as related physical property. Yet physical security rarely occupies a position of concern in the minds of most information security professionals. Seeing as physical security has multiple technical as well as administrative components, organizations fail to recognize it as a valid component of cyber security. Physical security must be one of the key components of your digital security plan. Without a well laid physical security infrastructure, your digital security remains half-baked at the best, and dangerously exposed at the worst – most important link in the cyber security chain. WHAT DOES SECURITY BY DESIGN (SBD) IMPLY? An effective physical security system when evolved by design; integrates people, procedures, and technology for the protection of the assets against all possible types of crime; to mention a few – intrusion, thefts, sabotage, malicious human attacks and most vital being the cybersecurity breaches. Hence, the designer or security director should weigh the objectives of the physical security system (PSS) clearly against available resources and then evaluate the proposed design to ascertain how well it meets the objectives of the security program. SECURITY BY DESIGN VS SECURITY BY NUMBERS? As discussed above, security by design takes into account multiple disciplinary approaches to ensure that a building is safe and secure for office, residence or commercial purpose; more so as part of fool proof PSS (physical security system). Sheer deployment of numbers without taking into account the pillars of the asset protection like risk assessment (RA) & risk management (RM) tools, non-integration of selected components of technology will only amount to flooding with human presence amounting to melee, overcrowding and overlapping of job profiles leading to utter confusion and non-accountability. Human error will overwhelm the system with no space for technology and processes leading to erratic & regressive response mechanism – thus vitiating the very principle of detect, deter, delay and respond (destroy) leading to ultimate failure of PSS. WHAT DOES SECURITY BY DESIGN INVOLVE? To design and construct a safe and secure building, a collaborative approach to the design process is required, starting at the conceptual phase of the project and continuing throughout the process. So is the case when we decide to evolve a PSS. It is necessary for all persons responsible for the safety and security of the building components to interact closely throughout the entire design and construction process. This means that all interested parties…

Matrix Project Series 5MP IP Bullet Camera

Matrix Project Series Bullet Cameras are designed for serious indoor and outdoor deployments. The cameras are a fit for large enterprises and project sites such as manufacturing units, construction sites, and environments where sturdy cameras are required. Designed with Sony STARVIS series back-illuminated sensors, the cameras capture exceptionally clear footage even in low-light environments. Next, the True WDR technology evenly balances the lighting in the video footage. As a result, one can view video footage without unnecessary blurs that are being created by different lighting conditions. Likewise, the H.265 compression technology ensures that the video storage is optimized by 50% and one can store the video for more days. Along with storage optimization, the IP cameras offer bandwidth optimization. Smart activity-based bandwidth consumption drops the bandwidth consumption to almost half. To add to this, the IP cameras also offer a smart streaming feature that lets the user define the image quality of different regions in the video footage. Therefore, while monitoring the region with the highest importance is allocated a higher bandwidth to view the footage clearly and the less important regions are allocated bandwidth accordingly. A clear application of the same is to view the number plate of the vehicles entering the premises at the entry points. That is just a part of the whole picture. What makes these devices apt for the premises is the in-built intelligent video analytics. The analytics are triggered on anomalies in the video footage i.e., any kind of irregular motion, intrusion, or tampering with the security device leads to a notification directly to a user in real-time. As a result, with these devices, he can eliminate the security challenges and create proactive security. Matrix IP Cameras offer in-built video analytics such as motion detection, intrusion detection, tripwire, tamper detection that deliver real-time notifications. Furthermore, in case of network failure, the cameras offer edge recording support where one can store upto video footage of 512GB. Digital Presentation to Maximize Corporate Collaboration

It’s often been said that the way of working will change even after COVID restrictions are behind us. More people are remote working, and that’s set to continue. But these changes have been happening in the background for a while – with new attitudes changing the environment we work in. Consider that regular work activity – the meeting. These are changing from longer ‘presentation-led’ meetings to more versatile collaboration-style ones using digital presentation; and those require a different kind of space and technology support. New workforce = new work environment According to Futuresource, 75% of the workforce will consist of digital natives by 2030. This makes them key factors in how the workplace will change1 . This group thrives on digital ways of working, since they are the first group to have grown up entirely surrounded with digital technology. So a millennial is less likely to respond to a long meeting around a conference table with a turgid presentation. The new attitude towards meetings is that they should be dynamic, with clear actions and results. These are more collaborative brainstorms, where a smaller group of people can really discuss and co-present. Many employees are much more likely to engage and be productive in this kind of environment. There is one trend that has been directly affected by the pandemic – the flexibility of access to meetings. With more people remote working, the ability to connect together into a meeting space has become crucial. That can be done using an online platform, or as a hybrid, also including a smaller meeting room. In this way, more people can be included, maximizing effective outputs from the meeting. According to Reuters, in December 2019, Zoom reported 10 million daily users. Three months later, the number of Zoom’s daily participants jumped to more than 200 million2 . This was driven by the impact of the pandemic, but predictions are that significant growth is set to continue. Enter digital presentation This dynamic shift in the way meetings are held has a direct impact on the facilities and AV/ IT managers of the world. These are the people tasked to make it work. In some organizations it’s even led to office redesigns, with more small spaces replacing the larger, more traditional conference rooms. This is a trend that’s also set to continue – according to Futuresource, 66% of companies say dedicated technology for informal meeting spaces is a medium/ high priority. But what about presenting tools? Although the majority of presentations are still done using Powerpoint, higher levels of collaboration need a different kind of screen, for example. It’s important for more than one person to be able to annotate the screen directly, for example. People need to be able to connect wirelessly from their own devices (also known as BYOD, or bring your own device) to provide input. Remote team members need to have a way to ‘dial in’ and be involved in the meeting. This is perhaps why 2021 global sales are expected to grow to 2.5 million Interactive Displays, representing a 12% increase. Making a screen interactive All these functions are part of the design of Hikvision’s Interactive Displays. The embedded software turns the screen into a fully-functional white board. This means more than one person can annotate on it at any one time. They are able to write more ‘naturally’ on the sensitive multi-touch point surface. It also allows zooming in and out to focus on details as they work. In the new digital workplace, meeting contributors want to be able to concentrate on the discussion. This can mean they aren’t distracted by taking notes at the same time. So they don’t miss anything, the screens save the input being created as the meeting progresses. There’s almost no limitation to the amount of pages stored, so even if participants are seized with inspiration lengthening the meeting, the work is saved. The content can then be shared by email for further reference or action. The screen design includes technologies to make them as clear as possible. They have 4K ultra-HD resolution, a crystal screen to resist scratches and anti-glare technology, so bright lights does not affect clarity. Making digital presentation accessible Usability is a central part of the Interactive Display design. They have simple icon commands, which react to use. For example, the whiteboard/ annotation function icon pops up when the pen is picked up, ready for immediate use. They look good too, stylishly finished to make and meeting space look elegant and efficient. Content can be sent to the screen directly, using it as an AP hotspot. This allows users to control their content presentation, even when it’s on their laptop or mobile device. The screens support wireless projections of up to 4 devices simultaneously, so multiple users can ‘present,’ facilitating collaboration and brainstorming. The screens can be used for fluid and seamless video conferencing, using Zoom, Teams, and Webex platforms. They are equipped with an integrated 8MP camera, incorporating the expertise of Hikvision as a leading camera manufacturer, making interactivity easier. They also come with an omnidirectional microphone, integrated speakers, and OPS box (to support Windows), making a complete video conferencing solution. There is even the option to mount the interactive display on a trolley to move around and use in different rooms. All of this provides a flexible platform to host an effective, energizing meeting for the 21st century workplace. The world of work has been changing for a while, and the recent global health phenomenon has fueled this transformation. By harnessing interactive screen technology, facility managers can meet employee needs by providing truly flexible and collaborative meeting resources. Digital presentations can be interactive and productive, leaving the traditional dry ‘death-by-Powerpoint’ experience firmly in the past. Smiths Detection Supports

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security inspection technologies, recently announced the commissioning of an HCVM scanner by the Lebanese Customs at the Port of Beirut as part of a collaboration with the Embassy of France in Lebanon, the French Ministry of Economy and Finance, Expertise France and the CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics. This mobile X-ray inspection system will increase the security of the port by providing it with improved detection of hazardous materials and illicit substances. This equipment, financed by the General Directorate of the Treasury, will play a critical role in the fight against smuggling. It also includes two years of maintenance of this scanner provided weekly by Smiths Detection, technical assistance for its installation and training of Lebanese Customs officers in charge of its operation. Transport of the scanner, from Vitry, France to Beirut, was carried out with the support of Smiths Detection’s partner, CMA CGM, as part of its continued support in Lebanon since the devastating explosion of 4 August 2020. The HCVM was welcomed at the port on Friday, 23 July by Anne Grillo, Ambassador of France to Lebanon, who said, “This new scanner [HCVM] will improve the detection of dangerous goods and the fight against smuggling. It will thus contribute to Lebanon’s economic recovery by restoring to Lebanese Customs its full capacity to act.” The HCVM, which can be easily moved from one location to another, will be the only scanner in the city capable of inspecting both containers and trucks, with a throughput of up to 25 trucks per hour. The HCVM scanner, previously used by the French Douanes, underwent a software update and a complete refurbishment before its shipment to the port of Beirut. Jerôme de Chassey, Vice President Commercial of Smiths Detection, said, “We are proud to be able to help Lebanon improve its security. The impact of the tragic explosion that devastated Beirut last year continues to be felt, and smuggling has continued since that disaster. This system, which will be vital to protect people and property, has been designed to be easy to use in order to facilitate the work of Lebanese Customs. This donation would not have been possible without the cooperation of our partners, first and foremost the French Government and the CMA CGM group, to whom we are immensely grateful.”

MarinHealth Medical Center Installs IX Series to Increase Communication, Privacy

Aiphone, the leading international manufacturer of intercom and security communication products, has installed its IX Series intercom system, complete with a custom door station, at MarinHealth Medical Center, a state-of-the-art medical facility in Northern California. The 327-bed, independent medical facility serving the North Bay community, opened Oak Pavilion, a 260,000-square-foot, four-story cutting-edge facility focused on patient-centric care and sustainable building design. An integral part of the $535 million expansion included the addition of intercom systems through its medical and surgical rooms, waiting rooms, Intensive Care Units (ICU), and newborn intensive care units (NICU). In addition, the facility installed customized door stations for 30 anterooms – an area that act as containment barriers, separating patient rooms from visitor walkways. “We ended up choosing Aiphone’s IX Series, as we felt it was the best option to meet our needs,” said Nick Tournis, who was IT operations consultant at MarinHealth Medical Center during this installation, “It’s future-focused, networked and features an IP-based system, all of which are ideal for a state-ofthe-art medical facility.” Tournis said Aiphone worked to identify the best solution for meeting the hospital’s needs and the IX Series encompasses all the different communication needs required by the facility, as well as providing flexibility for future expansion. Aiphone system solves a number of major pain points for the hospital, especially in improving visitor and patient experience. In addition, each of the units in the new pavilion – including the emergency department, intensive care unit, maternity ward, surgical center and neonatal intensive care units – required a system allowing doctors, nurses and other staff to travel freely between patient areas and waiting areas. The intercom stations in these areas also provide video, which allows for additional monitoring in cases of suspicious activity, and the ability to make duress calls in the event of an emergency.
